Fall is Underway!

It’s official! Fall is underway. Not only does the calendar tell us so, but the weather is most definitely changing. And have you noticed how dark it is in the early morning and how night is beginning to come on sooner too?

Fall is such a beautiful time of year, with all the changing colors, yet for many, it is one of the most difficult seasons to live through. I am one of those people—I call it experiencing the “fall dip.” Although I love the cool, crisp days, I know that it’s time to say goodbye to summer. It’s time to hang up my bicycle until next year, to put the shorts and sleeveless tops away along with my sandals. It’s time to pull out the long pants, sweaters, and boots because winter is on its way. It’s time to say goodbye to the outdoors. At least in part, because I know I’ll be spending more time indoors.

I’ve experienced the “fall dip” for as long as I can remember. As a child, the coming of fall meant it was time to go back to school. We had to trade in our swimsuits for appropriate school attire. It also meant that we had to replace our play time with time to do school work. As much as well all wished it weren’t so, those carefree days of summer had to come to an end.

Fall reminds us that everything must come to an end, everything must die—the leaves turn brilliant colors of gold, green, orange, and red and then go brown as they die and fall to the ground. The fruits and veggies that have grown in our gardens need to be picked so we can enjoy the abundant harvest during fall and winter. Yes, it’s time to harvest and store and prepare for winter.

<p">For businesses, fall also represents the entrance into the fourth quarter of the year. It means we need to make that last push to the end of the year so we can end it on a good note. Lots of us feel the need to get serious and “hunker down.” Admittedly, I feel it too as I coach myself to get more serious and dedicated to my work rather than take as much leisure time to play outdoors as I did in the summertime.<p">This time of year is all about change and transition. Fall is that “in between” time when we release one lighthearted season and ready ourselves for the next heavier, darker one. It’s the time when we do what we can to dig in and get things accomplished, yet we also prepare the time time ahead (i.e., the next calendar year for our businesses).

That “in between” time can make us uncomfortable. Although it represents the “neutral zone,” we can feel a bit lost because we’re no longer back there, and yet, we don’t know what lies up ahead. The best way to navigate it is to be as gentle and easy on ourselves as possible. If we need to grieve summer’s passing, allow for that. If we have dread about the impending winter, acknowledge it. Allowing is one of the most important things we can do—allow for the changing of the seasons and allowing our own responses to that change.

In my upcoming workshop, “Transitions—Thriving in the Midst of Change,” which will take place on Saturday, September 28, 2013 from 9:00am to 1:00pm, we will explore aspects of change and how we can manage it. The ultimate goal is to not only “get through” the change but to actually “grow and thrive” into it. Please CLICK HERE to sign up now.
